Kalam’s educational background in aeronautical engineering started at the Madras Institute of Technology. After graduating in 1958, he joined the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). His career trajectory shifted in 1969 when he joined the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), where he was the project director of the SLV-III, India’s first self-developed satellite launch vehicle. This project was a notable achievement in India’s space exploration history.

In 1982, Kalam returned to the DRDO and played a pivotal role in developing various missiles, most notably the Agni, India’s first intermediate-range ballistic missile, launched in 1989. The Agni missile combined technology from the SLV-III with other innovative approaches. Kalam’s influential leadership in these missile projects earned him the nickname “Missile Man,” highlighting his significant contribution to enhancing India’s defense capabilities.
